Dear Folks,

It seems like a month since I left home already. I hope you are all well. I am. I had a haircut yesterday and a tooth pulled this afternoon. We are learning how to march and take care of our clothes and hammocks. We will be in detention quarantine for three weeks from Friday because we lost a week on account of they give these shots on Friday and we were in there too late last week to get them. After three weeks we will have our liberty weekends and nights providing we do our work well enough.

Things have to be so clean in our barracks so that the officers won’t get their gloves dirty anywhere. We will be doing a lot of marching while we’re here. The fellas say we will have our different exams next week sometime. Well I suppose I could keep on writing but I will tell you all about my experience better when I get home. I am in with a fine bunch of clean fellas and they help a fella with everything. As long as a person pays close attention and works hard and obeys orders you get along pretty well. Well I hope you will write me.

With love,

Erwin Holmquist

P.S. You ought to see the haircuts we get. They just about take it all off.

P.S. We have pretty good chow.

Note: See interesting hammock link here.
