Dear Mother,
Our company commander just got word today that our graduation was going to be May 1 which will be next Friday (May first)*. He said that that was official. So that only leaves us one week. What is going to be after that I do not know.
I got a letter from Ruth today. She explained how to get to her place. We are having escort duty now so we will not have any liberty this weekend. So I do not know whether I will be able to see her or not. Sometimes the sailors have to hang around here a little while after graduation and then they have liberty every night and I think weekends.
I talked to a fella today from a company that just graduated and he said that he made aviation metalsmiths school and was going to have twenty two days leave (22). So I guess there must be some hope of having a leave.
This escort duty we are having in place of K.P. because we did better in the drill hall than the other company. We escort all visitors and so forth that come in the gates until they go out.
Well I probably will know more before you get this letter so I will say goodbye.
With Love,
Erwin Holmquist
*according to the 1942 calendar, Friday would have been May 2, not May 1 as stated in Erwin’s letter.
