Dear Mother,
I was just talking to one of the fellas yesterday about trade school and he made what I thought a pretty good suggestion. He said that in case I don’t get in the trade school I want that I should see the officer when we are at O.G.U. (out going unit) and explain the situation to him. This fella said that he knows several fellas that had it fixed up that way. The reason I wrote was because I thought it would be a wise idea if you would get a couple of letters of recommendation and send them to me. Then just in case I need them I can show them to this particular officer to prove my statements. When we take those tests there is about 9 hundred men doing it, and you can imagine that they have a hard time to place the men where they belong. If you will send a couple of letters right away, it will probably help a lot. I don’t know.
I will probably make a phone call some night this week. A lot of the fellas call home quite a bit.
I had a pint of white milk today for the first time since I was here. I have to quit now so goodbye.
With love,
Erwin Holmquist
