Chicago, Illinois
Dear Folks,
Just a line to let you know I arrived in Chicago about 7:30 your time or 6:30 Chicago time.
I didn’t have a chance to talk to you folks much Wednesday night but you know how it is.
I don’t know where the last few days went to, they went so fast. I am in the Sherman Hotel with four other fellows. That watch has come in pretty handy. I just run on those candy bars too.
I don’t know when I’ll leave for Texas or anything.
Well so long
Alva
Hotel Sherman first opened in Chicago in 1837. A second structure was built in 1860 but burned down in the Chicago fire of 1871. The fourth and final structure was finished in 1911 and was considered one of the nicest hotels in the city until the 1950s when it began to decline. It was finally closed in 1973. It is quite possible that this is the first hotel Alva ever stayed in.
