Dear Folks:

Well I better drop you a line today. This is open drill so we don’t have any classes. I am barracks guard just now. All I do is sit at a desk and watch the inside of the barracks. I keep my hat on etc. If a commissioned officer comes in I have to pop to attention and go up to him and salute and say “Sir, a/c Bessey A.D. reports as barracks guard.”

Well I will send a money order for $70 with this letter. Let me know as soon as you get it. That leaves me about $38 which is plenty. We get paid the 30th again.

I flunked my aircraft identification exam so I have to take another exam. I can’t seem to concentrate on studying.

Oh yes I got that letter from Dort in which she sent the letter from that kid. He is from the shop and he joined the Marines. He quit work just a day or so before I left.

Well it seems that Class 43-J, which is my class, is the last class to take the 9 mo. course. From now on it will be 15 1/2 mo. of training. I’m glad I don’t have to train that long. I guess they are having too many washouts this way. I guess about 70% of them wash out at primary. So you see my chances are pretty slim.

I better close now. I can’t seem to think of much to say. Today is just like a furlough. A whole day to myself (almost).

Well I guess I better study for that re-exam. It is really a very easy course but I just didn’t know the planes.

So long for now.
Alva

P.S. I guess you had a pretty hard winter, didn’t you?
