June 4, 1944

Sun. 5:30 P.M.

Dear Folks:

Well I’m back again. Not much to say but I’ll write anyway. I’m sending a money order for $100 in this letter so let me know when you get it. Which reminds me. If you got that other money and wrote me and told me, well write again and tell me because I think some of those letters may have got lost. See?

I got a letter from you yesterday with my new address on it. I got one from Garnet today with my new address on it. The mailman here has been sending our mail back because he didn’t know we were here.*

I now have 12 sorties in. I’m doing pretty good so far. I haven’t had any trouble. I can fly a good enough formation to suit any of them.

You asked about eats again. I have all the candy bars I want and gum too. (Pilots rations). We just help ourselves anytime we want to.

I’ll be sending my foot locker home about tomorrow.

Well I’ll have to close for now. I’ll write again soon.

Love,

Alva

*So where was Alva during this time period? Alva was stationed at Headcorn in Kent, England, Headcorn was built as an RAF Advanced Landing Ground. It was improved and made ready for USAAF and was the base for the 362nd Fighter Group, equipped with P-47 Thunderbolts. The 362nd arrived here in April of 1944, and flew from the base until July, when it moved to France to support the Allied liberation of Europe. The temporary airfield was returned to its civilian owners in September 1944, and the land returned to agriculture.
