Dear Folks:
I am sending you a couple papers. One is my will and the other is a paper giving Dad power of attorney for me. Now don’t get alarmed. That’s just a couple things that all officers must do. I’m sending these in a different envelop.
I also signed for some allotments. I am getting a $25 bond every month. These will be sent to you, so take care of them. I also signed for them to send you $60 a month. If you need this money, I want you to use it because that’s why I’m sending it to you. If you put it in the bank, don’t put it in my name alone. Put it in a joint account with me and Dad or Ma or whatever you want. Just so you can get it out if you need it. But for Pete’s sake use it if you need it. Get that place paid for as soon as possible and get the taxes all paid up. Sort of keep me posted on what you do.
You won’t get anything until after Jan. 1. I doubt if we get any pay ourselves until then. This is because they don’t know how long we will be here. As things stand now we are liable to pull out any day. (I hope so) I hope I have enough to do some Christmas shopping with.
We have a negro maid who comes in and cleans up our barracks. They have white girls to dish out our food and negro girls to pick up the dirty dishes and keep the tables clean. Some class huh?
And we really get fed good too. Of course it isn’t as good as Ma’s cooking.
I happened to get in one of the flights that is being assigned to a fighter-bomber squadron. This is like the navy dive bombers. We will still fly fighter planes and carry light bomb loads and heavy guns. We will all start out together and train as a unit. Even the enlisted men will train with us in the same outfit all the time. Everybody down to the cooks will stay and train at the same time. We won’t stay in Florida either. We are getting one of the best deals there is here.
Well it’s almost time for bed. A cold spell hit this place so it is pretty cold now.
Yours truly,
Alva
P.S. I just got my luggage today.
