Hendrina “Anna” (Hoek) Kornoelje was my 3rd great grandmother and endured a lot of pain and sorrow. She was born in 1809 in the Netherlands and married Marinus “Martin” Kornoelje in 1832. Anna and Martin had 15 children between the years 1832 an 1849. Ten of their children would die before the age of 3. Only five lived to adulthood.
April 7, 1834 Sarah died at the age of 16 months
July 1, 1834 Johanna died at the age of 7 months
Aug 6, 1834 Neeltje (Johanna’s twin) died at the age of 8 months
May 25, 1835 Gabriel died at the age of 7 months
Oct 7, 1835 Johanna (another Johanna) died at the age of 3 weeks
Dec 15, 1838 Johanna (a third Johanna) died at the age of 2 months
July 6, 1839 Gabriel (another Gabriel) died at the age of 22 months
March 31, 1842 Martina died at the age of 1 month
Oct 21, 1842 Hunrecht died just before 3 years of age
Nov 28, 1843 Martina (another Martina) died at the age of 6 months
Only children Cornelius, Sara, Johannes, Pieter, and Gabriel lived to adulthood.
In 1868 Anna and Martin came to America and settled in Grand Rapids, both at the age of 59. Martin died in 1882 and Anna in 1895 at the age of 85. We are descended from their son Johannes who came to America in 1867 with his wife Cornelia “Katie” Barendse, grandparents of Joanna Telder Holmquist. All five of Martin and Anna’s adult children moved to Grand Rapids between 1865 and 1871.
I would love to find a photograph of this amazing grandmother who endured so much!
