Page 11 Murell’s Family History

Murell states “little is known about grandmother Catherine (Blocher) Bessey except she was of Pennsylvania Dutch heritage.” It looks like the Blochers actually immigrated from Wurttemberg, Germany before the Revolutionary War, possibly as early as the 1750s. They settled in Pennsylvania, many years in Lancaster, and by the 1830s they had moved further north to Clarence, NY.

As written on the previous page, Jacob and Catherine were married in Ohio in 1868. His sister Rosie married Mike Sweitzer in Seneca County, Ohio in 1854, and they moved to Michigan in the next few years, presumably with brother John who died in Woodland, MI in 1857.

Jacob and Catherine did not live in Woodland very long. Their first daughter was born in Woodland in 1869 but by the time Hattie was born in 1871, they were living in Orange Township, Ionia County.
