Murell Bessey graduated from University of Michigan in 1940 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He got a job offer and moved to Maryland where he live for the remainder of his life. From the book written by Murell J. Bessey The Phillips Family of West Nottingham, Pennsylvania, completed in 1992, page 64.

“When the war began, Gladys got a job at the Edgewood Arsenal. After working in several plant operations she was assigned to the plant where she met her second husband, Murell Bessey, with whom she spent the rest of her life.  Murell, a graduate of the University of Michigan, was a Chemical Engineer who had been hired to supervise various pilot plant operations in the production facilities.  After the war ended he was transerred to research operations on various methods to disseminate chemical agents. Gladys worked at Edgewood for only a year when she was assigned to work which was dangerous to her health and advised to quit. Murell continued to work there until his retirement in 1972.”

Alva Devere Bessey, brother of Murell Bessey, was shot down and killed on 22 Jun 1945. He is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery.
