Week 1: Beginnings

This prompt made to wonder when I formally started my family history search on Ancestry.com. It appears the earliest pictures on my tree were added in late May of 2007. I added my mom’s graduation picture from 1944.

Dorothy Bessey

I also added a treasured picture of my grandmother’s baptism. Best estimated date is probably when she was in her early 20s and sometime before she married in 1913. Second from the left is Ethel Clouse Bessey.

It appears I added two other pictures that day. The first one is my grandmother’s parents, Rachel and William Clouse and one of Rachel and William with two of their children, my grandmother Ethel and her brother William.

A few days later, on June 2, I added several of my dad’s Navy pictures.

Ten months after starting this journey my dad, Erwin Holmquist, passed away at the age of 86. My mom had passed away almost ten years earlier in 1998. In the past 13 years I have met distant cousins virtually and in person, traveled to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City six times, visited the library in Indianapolis, collected countless photographs and documents, visited numerous cemeteries, attended a National Conference (which happened to be meeting in my hometown), gotten my DNA results, and joined the DAR. Sometimes I wonder if there is any other information out there, and then I discover something new and amazing!
